Planning Before Production

Most of a video's quality is set before filming. The script decides what viewers hear, the storyboard decides what they see and the shoot plan decides how smoothly production runs. We handle scriptwriting and pre-production so the experience is easy and enjoyable for you.

Our writers produce scripts for explainer videos, online ads, product videos, company tours and crowdfunding campaigns. They begin with your goal and audience, write in spoken language and time each scene against the story you need to tell.

Pre-production also covers location scouting, scheduling, talent and equipment lists. With those settled early, every hour on set goes into the film.

A professional script lifts every kind of shoot, because it sets the sequence, the tone and the words viewers remember.

What a video script holds

Close-up of hands highlighting a printed script page whose text is abstract lines.

A video script is written in two columns: what the viewer sees and what the viewer hears. Each line is timed to its scene, narration is written for the ear rather than the page, and on-screen text is marked where it appears.

Reading a script aloud is the quickest test of it, and our writers write for the ear from the first draft, which matters most in explainer videos, where the narration carries the idea. A line that looks fine on paper but trips the narrator is caught and fixed long before it reaches a viewer.

A scriptwriter and a director read a two column script on printed pages with pencils, no readable words.

Storyboard, shot list and production plan

Words become pictures in three steps. A storyboard turns the script into a sequence of drawn frames, each with the camera angle and action marked, and a shot list turns those frames into an ordered list of setups for the crew.

The breakdown that follows lists the locations, people, props and equipment each scene needs, from a tabletop setup for product videos to a walk through a whole building for company video tours. With all of it planned, the schedule is set before anyone arrives, and the shoot day runs smoothly from the first setup.

Revisions and production planning

A storyboard artist draws frames at a drawing table while a producer pins finished frames to a board.

Approval comes quickly when four things are settled before writing starts: the audience, the message, the length and the action viewers should take. You sign off each step, the script and then the storyboard, and each round of revisions sharpens the script rather than rethinking it.

Finished plans go straight to our videography team, so planning and filming come from one team and nothing gets lost along the way. Our scripts power every format we film, from online video ads to Kickstarter videos.

Scripts for vertical video

A script for a social feed follows different rules from a script for a long film. The hook arrives in the first seconds, captions carry the words for silent viewers, and one shoot has to supply several cuts.

Our short-form video for social feeds service turns one script into a planned run of vertical clips, from the opening line to the last cutdown.

Scriptwriting Questions & Answers

Can we start with the script first?

Yes. Every script we write is built to be filmed by our own crew, and it arrives with the storyboard, shot list and schedule ready for the shoot. Starting with the script is a smart first step, because the plan shows exactly what the production will need.

What does a storyboard show?

Each scene as a sketch, with the camera angle, the action and the narration marked. It lets you see the film, and approve it, before any filming begins.

How many revisions are included?

Revision rounds are planned with you for each project, and settling the audience, the message and the length before writing begins makes every round count. You review the script and then the rough cut, so each round moves the work forward.

Who approves the script?

You do. Every script is approved by you before storyboarding or filming begins, and on productions we film, you review a rough cut before the final edit, so the finished film says exactly what you want to say.

What do you need from me to start?

The goal of the video, who will watch it, where it will run and any facts or materials it must include. A short call covers all four.
