Native or cross-platform: choosing with reasons

Some jobs belong on the phone itself: a tool your buyers open every day, a camera that scans a receipt, an alert the moment an order ships, a screen that keeps working with no signal. That is when an app beats a website. Our custom software development team plans, designs and builds those apps for Los Angeles businesses.

The first decision shapes every cost that follows: separate native apps for each platform, or one shared codebase for both. Every project has a lead project manager, who lays out both options for your product with the reasons and settles the choice with you before any code is written.

Native apps are written in Swift for Apple's iPhone and iPad and in Kotlin for Android. They get the fullest access to each device and the smoothest feel, and they cost two builds. We recommend them when the app depends on the camera, Bluetooth, background work, advanced animation or the newest system features.

Shared-code frameworks produce both apps from one codebase. They suit products whose screens are mostly forms, lists and content, where reaching both stores with one team matters most. For the detail, see iOS app development for iPhone and iPad, Android app development for Google's platform and cross-platform app development for shared code.

Design for thumbs, notifications and offline use

A startup founder and a developer test an app on a phone in a coworking space, the founder delighted.

People use apps with one thumb, on the move and sometimes on a weak signal. Good mobile design is built around that: controls within reach, text that grows with the phone's own setting and flows that work one-handed. Our research-led interface design turns the plan into wireframes you sign off before production, and for an in-depth evaluation a pool of people like your buyers tests it.

Shared parts from design systems and component libraries keep the app and your website recognizably one brand. Notifications are designed as a feature in their own right: permission is asked at a moment that makes sense, and people choose the topics they hear about.

Offline behavior is decided screen by screen: what is saved on the phone, what waits in a queue until the signal returns and what needs a live connection. A dropped signal then pauses the app instead of losing someone's work.

A person uses an app with one thumb on a train, a calm commute.

Back end, APIs and payments behind the app

Behind every useful app is a server that holds the accounts, the data and the files. Where your website already has one, we reuse it and add what the app needs: sign-in, storage, uploads, notifications and an admin view for your team.

Building your own API lets the website, the app and your partners read from one source of truth, and connecting systems through APIs brings in your accounting, CRM, inventory and payment tools. Your records then live in one place, however people reach them.

We have built systems like this before. For Campus Storage, we built the database behind the business: it takes orders, connects to FedEx and payment processors and alerts drivers to the most efficient delivery route.

Payments run through Apple Pay, Google Pay and your processor, within each store's rules on digital goods. When the app grows into a product of its own, with subscriptions and many client accounts, its architecture follows SaaS platform development.

Store review, release and updates

A developer and a product owner review a back end plan beside a phone running the app.

Approval from Apple and Google is the last step between a finished app and your buyers, and we plan for it from the first screen. Both stores review apps before release, so their requirements are built into the app as it is made.

We cover Apple's essentials, from account deletion and a privacy policy link to in-app purchase for digital features, along with Google Play's own policies and the target level it raises each year.

We plan the app around those rules, run beta builds with testers, prepare and submit the listing and answer reviewer questions. After release we keep the app current with new operating system versions, because the build requirements move as well.

  • Apple has required uploads to App Store Connect to be built with Xcode 26 or later since 28 April 2026.
  • Google Play requires new apps and updates to target Android 16 (API level 36) from 31 August 2026.

Passkeys, wallets and privacy declarations

Sign-in is where an app wins or loses its users, and passkeys make it quick. They replace passwords with cryptographic key pairs, based on FIDO Alliance and W3C standards, and both platforms support them: Apple syncs them through iCloud Keychain, and Android handles them through its Credential Manager API on Android 9 and later.

We add passkeys alongside email or social sign-in, wallet payments alongside card entry, and privacy declarations that match what the app actually collects. When the website and the app should share one account, so a buyer uses the same login everywhere, our web design and development team builds both sides.

Mobile App Development Questions & Answers

Should the app be native or cross-platform?

Native, when the app relies on advanced device features, heavy animation or the newest system capabilities. Shared code, when the screens are mostly forms, lists and content and one team should reach both stores. We recommend one route for your product and explain the trade-offs.

What does the App Store or Google Play review need?

A ready app with the platform rules built in: privacy information, account deletion inside the app, the right payment route for digital features and, on Google Play, a current target API level. We prepare the listing, the test builds and the answers to reviewer questions, so your launch moves smoothly.

Can the app share a back end with our website?

Yes, and for most apps that is the better setup. Accounts, orders, content and payments live in one back end that serves both through an API. Your data stays consistent, features are built once, and staff manage everything from one admin area.

How are push notifications and accounts handled?

Accounts use secure sign-in with passkeys or an established identity provider. Notifications travel through Apple's and Google's push services. People are asked for permission when an alert's value is clear, and they choose their own topics, which gives them a reason to stay subscribed.

Do you maintain the app after release?

Yes. Operating systems change every year and store requirements move with them. We update builds, fix issues, add features and watch crash reports, so the app keeps working as phones change.
