How AI answers choose sources

When a buyer asks Google, Bing Copilot or ChatGPT for a recommendation, the answer names a handful of sources. Being one of them begins with ordinary search. We treat AI search optimization as an extension of search engine optimization: we fix what keeps pages out of the index, then raise the clarity and substance that make a page worth citing.

People also call this work GEO, short for generative engine optimization, or AEO, short for answer engine optimization. Both names mean the same thing: making your business easy for AI answers to find, understand and cite.

Google states that AI Overviews and AI Mode have no additional requirements and need no special optimizations. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet to be shown as a supporting link. That is good news: the road to AI answers runs through the same groundwork as search.

Each system reports differently. Google folds AI traffic into the Performance report in Search Console under the Web search type. Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, that counts citations in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries.

ChatGPT search relies on OpenAI's search crawler, so we make sure your site welcomes it. Because the routes differ, we check all three and record which of your pages each one already cites for the questions your buyers ask. That record is the baseline for every change that follows, and technology advice before you build weighs the bigger choices around it.

Crawl access, indexing and snippet eligibility

Access comes first. We check robots.txt, status codes, canonical tags, rendering and sitemap health so Googlebot and Bingbot can fetch and index every page that matters, work shared with Google SEO and Bing SEO.

For ChatGPT search, OpenAI advises allowing OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. That crawler is separate from GPTBot, which means a site can appear in search while keeping its content out of model training; changes take about a day to take effect.

Snippet controls such as nosnippet and max-snippet limit what Google shows, including in AI features, and Google-Extended covers use by Google's other AI systems. Each control is set deliberately, page by page, to match what you want shared.

Content and entities that answer the whole question

Google tells site owners to write for people, with clear signs of who made the content, how and why. AI answers lift passages, so each page needs a direct answer near the top, followed by the detail, definitions and exceptions a buyer needs.

Our content writing team shapes pages around the questions buyers really ask and adds the specifics only your business can give. Google also says no AI text file or special markup is needed, so structured data simply has to match the visible text.

Entities are the facts that identify your business: its name, services, hours and reviews. For local businesses we align them across directories and the listing managed through Google Maps marketing, and we publish who stands behind the advice, because Google names experience, expertise and trust among the qualities it looks for.

Where AI helps draft a page, a person approves every passage: how we use AI in creative work shows that review, and AI policy and governance sets what AI is allowed to publish under your name.

Measuring citations next to clicks

An editor rewrites a page at a standing desk so it answers the whole question, a coffee beside her.

A citation is worth most when it leads to an inquiry, so we measure three fronts. Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic with your other web search traffic. Bing's report shows total citations, average cited pages, grounding queries and page-level counts.

For ChatGPT, we sample your key questions on a regular schedule and record the sources shown. We report all of it every month next to clicks, calls and form leads through analytics and tracking setup, to show whether a citation produces an inquiry as well as a mention. Workflow automation built around AI agents can follow up on every inquiry it brings, and online marketing plans the full channel mix around the results.

Connecting AI search to your other AI work

AI search brings visitors to the door, and the rest of our AI services makes sure they find a ready answer inside.

A buyer who arrives from an AI answer meets a site assistant drawing on models from AI application development, and assistants such as ChatGPT or Claude can read your catalog or book appointments within the actions you allow. Every part runs on the same facts about your business, so the answer a buyer reads in ChatGPT matches the one your site gives.

We build each piece, from conversational assistants for buyers and staff to MCP servers for AI assistants.

AI Search Optimization Questions & Answers

Do I need a special file such as llms.txt?

Not for Google. Google states that appearing in AI Overviews and AI Mode takes no new machine-readable files, AI text files or markup, and no special structured data. What counts is indexable pages with clear text and accurate structured data. Other systems publish their own crawler rules in robots.txt.

Does AI Mode change what I should write?

Write so the answer comes first. Because AI answers quote passages, a strong page puts a direct answer near the top, adds the detail, definitions and exceptions below it and covers the follow-up questions a buyer asks next. That structure reads well for people and for any system that quotes you.

Can I choose whether AI systems use my content?

Yes. Each provider offers its own controls, and we set them for you. Google offers nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex for Search, and Google-Extended for its other AI systems. OpenAI separates OAI-SearchBot for search from GPTBot for training. Each control is set to match your decision, page by page.

How do you measure appearance in AI answers?

Google folds AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic into the Performance report in Search Console. Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations in Copilot and Bing AI summaries in a public preview. For ChatGPT, our team samples your key questions at set intervals and records which sources appear.

Is this different from SEO?

It builds on SEO and adds work that SEO reports leave out: checking access for AI crawlers, writing pages that answer whole questions, aligning facts about your business across the web and tracking citations. AI answers cite pages that search engines have indexed, which is why the basics come first.
