Native apps for phones, tablets and foldables

Android puts your app in front of buyers on phones, tablets and foldables from many manufacturers, each with its own screen size and hardware. Vivid Concept builds Android apps in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose, which Google describes as Android's recommended modern toolkit for building native UI, as part of our custom software development.

A native build reaches everything the phone offers: the camera, location, Bluetooth, background work and the system share sheet. It follows the Material Design conventions Android users know, so your app behaves the way they expect from the first screen.

Layouts adapt from compact phones to tablets and foldables, with navigation that changes as the window changes size. We test on a spread of real devices and on the Android versions your audience still runs, including older ones.

Choosing between platforms? We weigh native against shared code in custom mobile apps, and building an iPhone app covers the Apple side, with one back end serving both.

Design for many screens

Two mobile developers hold and test two different phones side by side at a bright desk, comparing them with smiles.

One Android app can open on a compact phone in the morning and a foldable at night. Compose lets one set of interface code adapt through window size classes, so a list on a phone becomes a list with a detail pane on a tablet.

We design those adaptive layouts at the start, support font scaling and the TalkBack screen reader, and check every screen in the emulator and on hardware. Dark theme follows the setting on the person's device.

A designer lays out app screens for a phone, a tablet and a foldable phone on a desk.

Payments, sign-in and notifications

Google Pay gives buyers one-touch checkout for physical goods and services. Card and wallet payments run through your processor, and taking payments with Stripe is one route we set up.

We sort every product and feature you sell onto the right payment route. Features, content and digital goods sold inside the app run through Google Play's billing system, as its payments policy sets out, while physical goods and services use Google Pay or your processor.

Passkeys work through Android's Credential Manager API on Android 9 and later, offered next to email or social sign-in. Notifications ask permission when the reason is obvious and let people choose their topics, which keeps your messages welcome.

Google Play release

A person pays for a coffee with a phone tap at a cafe counter, smiling.

A staged rollout lets a new release reach a small share of users before everyone. Every project has a lead project manager, who plans each release with you. We prepare the store listing, graphics, content rating and privacy information, run internal and closed testing tracks and stage each rollout, so any problem surfaces early and stays small.

Since 31 August 2026, Google Play has required new apps and app updates to target Android 16 (API level 36) or higher, and existing apps must target Android 15 (API level 35) or higher to stay available to new users on newer devices. We build to the current level and follow Google's annual target level cycle with each update.

A developer and a product manager watch a phone as the app updates in a staged release, a laptop open.

Back end and the rest of the product

The server behind the app comes from designing an API for your product, and it reaches your accounting, CRM and inventory by connecting systems through APIs. Buyers see live data, and your staff keep working in the tools they know.

When the product also needs Apple devices, we compare separate native builds with one codebase for iPhone and Android and recommend the route that fits your product and budget.

An app that grows into a subscription service with many accounts follows the pattern of software-as-a-service builds, and our web design and development team builds the website that supports it.

Android App Development Questions & Answers

Do you build with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose?

Yes. Kotlin is the language, and Jetpack Compose is Google's recommended toolkit for native Android interfaces. Classic Android views still come in where an existing component needs them, and the code is organized so new screens are quick to add.

How do you handle so many Android screen sizes?

With adaptive layouts that respond to window size, built from reusable components so every new screen inherits the behavior. We test on a range of phones, tablets and foldables and check font scaling and TalkBack along the way.

What does Google Play require before release?

A current target API level, a store listing with graphics and a content rating, privacy information and compliance with Play policies. We keep your app on the current target level, prepare every item and run the testing tracks before the public release.

Can the app use passkeys and Google Pay?

Yes to both. Android's Credential Manager API brings passkeys to Android 9 and later, and Google Pay handles wallet payments for physical goods and services. Digital items follow Google Play's billing rules, and each sale is planned to match.

Do you also build the iPhone version?

Yes, either as a separate native iPhone app or as one shared codebase for both when that fits the product. Both routes keep a single back end, and we explain the trade-offs so the choice is clear.
